All-new Toyota Camry now in Malaysia - from RM149,900 for 2.0L 4-speed automatic

UMW Toyota has launched the latest generation of Toyota Camry to Malaysian market at the end of last week. Codenamed XV50, the new Camry wears an all-new outlook both to the interior and exterior, and received one new set of drivetrain too. This time around for the 7th generation, Toyota Camry is assembled locally, as opposed to Thai-CBU for the XV40 generation. Like the previous generation too, Toyota is offering two variants for the 2.0L, namely 2.0E and 2.0G. The range topper is now 2.5V, displacing the previous flagship 2.4V. Prices are RM149,900, RM157,900 and RM180,900 respectively for the variant listed above.

Compared to the current XV40 Toyota Camry, it seems that Toyota has goes for another major shift in styling philosophy again. Some are deemed progression while some are not so. The XV50 Camry has eschewed the current car detailing, instead leaving a spartan-kind of look. The front end is dominated by the angular hood leading edge that is very sharp, lending a strong presence, majestic even. This is accentuates further by the strong edgy headlamp and a prestigious looking radiator grille. Toyota has put some effort is cheering up the grille by incorporating some indenting on the outer edge of the slats, giving it a more chiselled look.
The rear end meanwhile has ditched the current car shapely taillight. In comes a relatively simple item, with simple internals too. At least, the clear lens part is aligned with the trunk lid garnish, unlike our home grown Preve. Anyway, despite the look, it is actually LED item. There is also a faint character line running along the belt line of the door, continues until near the taillight before splitting into two, one that dives down along the taillight housing towards the bumper, while the other one joins the trunk lip edge. The rear end can somehow me summarized as quite simplistic in looks with minimum garnishing to spice up the look. Judging by the target market of the Camry, it is considered as an OK move.
In terms of dimension, the new Camry is 4,825mm long, 1,825mm wide and 1,470mm tall. The wheelbase is 2,775mm. Compared to the old Camry, the new one is 5mm wider while the rest of other exterior dimension is carried over. Despite the similar dimension with its predecessor, the new car is more spacious inside such as 13mm more rear legroom, thanks to repackaged cabin and re-sculpted seat back. Boot volume now stands at 515L, which is 11L more than before.

In chassis department, the new Camry rides on a rehashed platform, so it continues to ride on McPherson struts up front and dual-link at the back. Braking is assured by the ventilated disc at the front, while the rear wheel is stopped by the solid disc. Power steering is electrically-assisted item for an added economy and efficiency. The 2.0L car is shod with 215/60 R16 while the range topper 2.5V is loaded with 215/55 R17 tyres and rim combo.

In terms powertrain, the new Camry range is a mixture of an outgoing (which already can be said even the XV40) and the new. The range starter is 2.0L 1AZ-FE engine punching out a trusty 148PS@6,000rpm and 190Nm@4,000rpm of power and torque. The drive is channelled via the antique 4 speed automatic gearbox. I honestly think if Toyota really needs to contain the cost, they should reconsider using the older 3 speed auto, drum brakes and material colored bumper! On the brighter side, the range topper is powered by a new 2AR-FE 2,494cc 4 cylinder engine. Kicking out 181PS@6,000rpm of power and healthy 231Nm of torque at 4,100rpm, this version is mated to 2012-spec 6 speed automatic transmission. More details and photo after the jump.

The new Toyota Camry - coming in June from RM152,000

The new generation Toyota Camry will be launched in Malaysian market in June Three variants with two engine option will be offered here; 2.0E, 2.0G and 2.5V. The 2.0L version is carried over wholesomely from the current Camry, meaning that it will offer 148PS@6000rpm and 190Nm@4000rpm of power and torque and will be hooked to an "advanced" automatic transmission that comes with amazing four forward ratio. Yes ladies and gent, it is 4 speed auto in the year 2012! What don't they just hook it up with the CVT from current Altis 2.0L. Every car maker should be "like" Proton. In order to get away from the world of competing gear ratios, it is better to just use CVT with its infinitely variable gear. You can specify 21 preset ratios if you want!
The 2.5L version however is more like 2012 car. The car is powered by bigger 4-cylinder lump with 2,494cc kicking 181PS@6000rpm and 231Nm@4100rpm. Drive is channelled via 6 speed automatic gearbox.

Orders for the all-new CKD Toyota Camry is now accepted at all Toyota sales outlet. The price starts from RM152,000 for the 2.0E, rising to RM160,000 for the 2.0G and finally topping the scale at RM183,000 for the 2.5V. There is a hefty price increased over the current model which also is a CBU, so Toyota better has an explanation in terms of better equipment level etc. The carried over of archaic transmission will not help either. But this is only the ramblings on non-Toyota buyer, for those who's buying, a T badge worth the world no matter to what thing it is fixed to! More details including the detail specification after the jump.

Could this be Malaysian Toyota Camry?

Is it a trend now that the hometown of Japanese car maker will be the last to get the new model? After the new Civic make it debut in US, GCC then lift the lid of their new Civic, whereas the European model will bow in during next month Frankfurt Autoshow. JDM? No where to be seen yet.

Same story with Camry here. USDM makes it debut earlier this week. Now Toyota Ukraine revealed their model too, with totally different front and rear styling. This is strikingly similar to the car leaked on Modelista brochure. This could be the JDM car too, and could be destinated to be Asian model as this is the "RIGHT" Camry with upright, striking front grille and more formal tail light which shouts Executive Class.

Anyway enjoy the photos. It does not show anything we did not yet know, but this is the official, clear hi-res photos.

Leaked brochure of JDM Toyota Camry 2012

These are the clearest photos of JDM Toyota Camry compared to last spyshots. This time around the rear end design is clear to be seen. As expected, the front fascia is clear departure from bland USDM car but is does look like a bloated Corolla to me. The rear end however, is a bit too bland. The chrome strip that runs into white section of tail light is pure, well, bland. It doesn't look like LED illuminated either. Oh well, if there's one car company that can afford to be complacent, this is it!

Toyota Camry 2012 - USDM sets to be revealed on 23rd August 2011

The promotional activity for the USDM Toyota Camry has started. After a series of teaser (become a trend nowadays), Toyota has released a launch announcement, together with official interior photos.

The dashboard looks quite upmarket with silver lined between upper and lower fascia and surrounding side vents. The floor console is typical Toyota, with the gear shifter occupied the driver side and identical space next to it for easier drive conversion.

It is quite fascinating to see the kind of image Camry impart to the US market, compared to Asian market. The USDM Camry looks as ordinary as Corolla here, with no chrome accent for plasticky front grille and very subtle rear lights. Asian Camry on the other hand must have big, shinny, chromed and perfectly detailed front grille complete with highly intricate inner headlight graphics. The rear will be LED-flood, surrounded by big additional reflector in the taillamps. The seats will be light coloured with premium fabric or leather that is more soothing and calming rather than drab part fabric, part leather than bounds the thin line between nasty and ugly.

Anyway, lets wait for August 23rd.

Toyota Camry Hybrid 2012 caught during promo shoot

*Updated with non-hybrid front fascia design
A set of new Camry Hybrid photos has surfaced out, when the 2012 model went for promo shooting. For current generation of Toyota Camry, the front and rear detailing for Hybrid model is usually slightly different from the pure-fuel car. The USDM model, furthermore, is even more different from the Asian model. What we see here is never what we will get here in Malaysia, saved for the central section (from A-pillar to C-pillar). Anyway hybrid photos are copyrighted to KGP.
