Toyota Avanza is the hottest selling vehicle in Indonesian market. However, the 2003-launched model is getting long in the tooth. In Malaysian market at least, the introduction of modern mini-MPV such as Nissan Grand Livina, Perodua Alza and Proton Exora has totally outclassed the Toyota budget MPV. It loses out on exterior aesthetic and interior architecture.

The new Avanza is set to be anything but of the above. Judging from the recent leaked photos, it appeared that Toyota has leaped out from their typical styling complacency. The front end design has some Passo Sette overtones in it, especially in headlamp design with reverse curvature in its bottom edge. The side mirror is more stylish, instead of bearing a resemblance to dumbo the elephant.
There seems to be two front end finishing, probably a "Standard" and "Sporty" differentiation. The dark blue model below have a chrome bar in the middle of radiator grille, whereas the white colored car has the chrome hood garnish at the leading edge of the hood instead. The bumper on white car also have bigger lower bumper intake and different surfacing surrounding the foglamp.

Arenakereta reader has spotted the 2012 Avanza on Malaysia highway. The most important facts from the photo is the two different rear bumper design spotted on the two MPV on the truck. The white Avanza has circular rear reflector and more pronounced sills. The silver Avanza in front of it has different rear bumper, with horizontal reflector design instead. The sills is flat, indicating no side skirt was fitted. The white one is probably similar to the photo above, representing a "Sporty" variant.

Photo from the assembly line shows the "Standard" model with mid-way chrome garnish for the grille and nondescript rear bumper. The front bumper design is similar to the dark blue car above and visibly different from the sportier item on the white examples above.

If there is one area that betray the age of Avanza, it is the interior design. No such worries though for 2012 model. The spyshot shows a thoroughly modern design, albeit unmistakably south-asian in its basic design, like Perodua Alza. The steering for one is as modern as the one in Alza. The dashboard is similar in concept with the 2011 Perodua Myvi, with angular and high mounted center console design. The meter binnacle appears to be non-Optitron, with red/orange graphics.
In Indonesia, the car is rumored to be launched in November 2011. As before, 1.3l and 1.5l engine will be made available. The higher capacity car is reputedly called Avanza Veloz, probably inspired by the word "velocity"? With the new Avanza being trucked away in Malaysia, probably Malaysia launch date is also not too far away.
